Wimbledon 2016: Sania Mirza, Rohan Bopanna and Leander Peas move to next round

The top-ranked defending champion Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis have reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon 2016. The famous Indo-Swiss pair quickly thrashed the pair of Christina McHale and Jelena Ostapenko with a 6-1 6-0 victory on Monday to enter the quarter-finals of lone grass court Major.

The former title holder Leander Paes who have also partnered with Martina Hingis also progressed to the next round after comfortably dismantling the New Zealand-German pairing of Artem Sitak and Laura Siegemund with a 6-4 6-4 victory. They will now advance to the mixed double third round.

But for Rohan Bopanna, India’s highest ranked men’s doubles player it was a mixed day. As he advanced to the third round of mixed doubles contest with Australian partner Anastasia Rodionova, on the other hand, he was ousted along with his Romanian partner Florin Mergea from the men’s double competition.

In the men’s double competition Bopanna and Mergea lost a hard fighting third round against 10th seeds Henri Kontinen and John Peers by 6-2 3-6 4-6 7-6(8-6) 6-8 in two hours and 55 minutes.

But on the positive side, Bopanna along with his partner Anastasia Rodionova will join Leander Paes and his partner Martina Hingis in the pre-quarter-finals. In the mixed double, they beat the 13th seeded pairing of Treat Huey and Alicja Rosolska by 6-3, 7-6.

Apart from Bopanna disappointing loss at men’s dóuble Wimbledon 2016 all the other players from India have performed quite well on Monday. Mirza and Hingis former defending are looking forward to making their name in the history again by winning their second Wimbledon final.

While Leander Paes will also be defending his mixed double title with Martina.
