When a smartphone suffers from water damage, in many instances it can be bad news all the way around. On one hand, the user is left with a device that will not function or has serious damage in the face of the device. This is where the problems often arise from, though, as people will frequently have their devices fall in the sink, fall outside into the grass or road – which could be wet, and a variety of other places.

When it comes to fixing your smartphone after it has been drenched, the first method the user will want to try to correct the problem is placing it in a small container of rice. Simply take the device as much apart as possible, which means taking the battery casing out, and then dropping it in the case for a few hours, or an entire day. This method can go a long way to correcting the problem, and can be easily duplicated with devices that do not have battery cases – like an Apple iPhone 6 or Samsung Galaxy S6 device.

Sometimes the above option will only take the user so far. Unfortunately, there is a challenge in coping with a wet device. Sometimes you will be able to regain function of the device, but various components, like a microphone or screen, could have encountered permanent damage. The great thing about these types of issues is that replacement parts exist on websites like Amazon and others. For those who are tech savvy, and confident with their device – they can do these jobs themselves. At this point, the warranty is probably shot anyway – so you’re not going to be losing a ton if you damage the phone entirely.
This option is not for everyone, though. Other options include taking it to repair stores or kiosks at various shopping centers. Even the Apple Store will fix most devices for a maximum price, or a set price. Meaning, a new screen might cost $120 for a particular phone, but even if there are other issues – the most it will cost is, say, $225. Again, it’s all about what you’re trying to get out of the device, and how much you’re willing to spend. Buying a new smartphone out of contract can be mind-numbingly expensive – so this might be a better option than throwing the towel in entirely. Apple and Samsung both have arrangements with devices like the iPhone 5, 5s, 6, and 6 Plus, as well as the Galaxy S5, and Galaxy S6.

If your device simply isn’t cutting it, or you feel that your situation is so bleak that you must try an alternative option or don’t have any options left – reach out to your provider or manufacturer. There is a very good chance that they will be able to guide you to the least expensive option in terms of coming to a resolution. Also, consulting forums for your device is a good option as well. However, if you have insurance – it should be noted that tampering with the device yourself after it has been damaged can void out that insurance, so be cautious at all points.
