Gupta Brothers Case: Two brothers, Rajesh and Atul, have been accused of corruption. These two belong to a wealthy family and have a close relationship with the ex-President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma. Both were unfairly making profits and exercising wrongdoings.
Both the brothers were from Uttar Pradesh, India. They shifted to South Africa in 1993, but soon after their stay, in 2018, a judicial board started investing their share in corruption. They paid a hefty price to win the contracts to gain state treaties and government authorization. However, two denied all the accusations and wrongdoings.
Bribing high-authorized people to make most of the profit into their hands; moreover, Dubai police also reported that two men in South Africa had committed criminal assaults and money laundering.
Issue of Red Notice By Interpol
“Red Notice” by Interpol has been forced into the case. Red notices are altered for those who are wanted criminals. Besides, one of the brothers, a third one named Ajay, is also involved in the corruption matters and is wanted by the authorities of South Africa, but due to some reasons, he has not got arrested yet.
In India, the Gupta family has also been accused of money laundering and other criminal charges; in 2018, tax officers raided the properties belonging to the brothers in various states and companies in Delhi.
The severe cases have been coming after the involvement of the former president Jacob Zuma of South Africa in corruption reports. The close link with Jacob Zuma has turned the charges more harshly.
UAE and South Africa Extradition Treaty
To manage massive political parties and power in South Africa, the Gupta brothers used their power to control all the political processes while ensuring good relations with the president. Misappropriate use of state reserves, exploiting government contracts, and winning state treaties. Furthermore, the former president refuses all the allegations and the two brothers.
The brothers escaped from South Africa after that, in 2021, the country bought an Extradition agreement with UAE. The UAE President Cyril Ramaphosa’s government has announced that they wish the brothers to return and hand over themselves to the police department to face all the charges after the deal. However, the brothers have not back to South Africa yet.
