IRCTC Website Hacked; Lakhs of Individual Data Feared Stolen

The official website of Indian Railway, IRCTC is the largest e-commerce site in India, and lakhs of transactions are being done in this portal everyday. On May 04, 2016, hackers infringed into the server of Indian railway, and according to experts, confidential data of more than one crore people are at risk.

According to a senior railway official, customers used to enter their confidential details like PAN number while booking tickets. Data loss may result in creating forged documents which is a real threat to individual privacy and confidentiality.

Maharashtra Additional Chief Secretary K P Bakshi told that Police have conveyed an alert message to Indian Railway, and he refused to divulge any more details. Data accessed through illicit means can be sold to corporate firms for a huge sum, and they can use it to find potential customers.

In a recent development, IRCTC PRO Sandip Dutt told News 18 that all the news spreading about the hacking are mere speculations, and the website is very healthy, and it is not at all hacked. Indian Railway Board is now waiting for the copy of data from Cyber cell, so that they can analyze whether it is stolen from their server. It has been reported that IRCTC officials have alerted Maharashtra Police to look into this.
