J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter book series, recently revealed there are 11 other schools of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter universe. The author divulged that there is one school in the United States and named several others. The author took to Pottermore to explain how the wizarding schools are broken up, and even filled readers in on different confederations of schools as well as smaller institutions that are a run below schools such as Hogwarts.
Posting on Pottermore, Rowling said, “the wizarding populations of most countries choose the option of homeschooling. Occasionally, too, the magical community in a given country is tiny or far-flung and correspondence courses have been found a more cost-effective means of educating the young.”
The author went on to explain there are 11 schools officially registered with the International Confederation of Wizards. Hogwarts, which was of course the school at the center of the Harry Potter films is among those 11. There are other small schools around the world that haven’t been named in any of the movies or books.
We have been introduced to some of the other schools thanks to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, such as Beauxbatons Academy of Magic and the Durmstrang Institute. The new schools that were recently revealed are Mahoutokoro, Uagadou, Castelobruxo and Ilvermorny.

Mahoutokoro is located in Japan on one of the topmost points in the volcanic island of Minami Iwo Jima. The school is made of mutton-fat jade. The students are accepted at the age of seven, but are ferried back and forth between school and home until age seven. Uagadou is said to be the largest wizarding school in the world and is located in Africa. The school is said to be carved out of the side of a mountain and shrouded in mist.

Castelobruxo is located deep in the heart of the Brazillian rain forest and is disguised to look like ruins to those who aren’t trained in magic. The final new school that was revealed was Ilvermorny and this institution is based in the United States. While the location is not known, it is said to be located on the East Coast, but Rowling has previously divulged its not in New York.
