Xiaomi Mi 5 Review, Price and Features

Xiaomi has unveiled its next flagship for 2016, the Mi 5 at the MWC 2016 in Barcelona as well as in Beijing. The Mi 5 is expected to hit the shelves in China from 1st March onwards.

External

The Mi 5 has a lot of commonality with the Mi Note series phones. The 3D glass curve design has been refined, and the metal frame amalgamates flawlessly onto the glass back on the edges. It is sleek at 7.25 mm and weighs 129 g. There is a 3D ceramic variant also.

A word of caution, the feel of the device is good but a wee bit slippery for comfort. On the front is the slim home button which also couples as a fingerprint scanner.

On the left side of the Mi, 5 is a nano SIM card slot and a volume control and power/standby button. There is a USB type C port at the base surrounded by two speaker grilles.

Display

The Mi 5 boasts a 5.15 inch full HD display and uses an IPS LCD panel. The Mi 5 supports Sunlight Display, which readjusts the brightness of the pixels so that the screen is visible in bright sunlight.

Chipset, RAM, Storage and Connectivity

The Mi 5 is available in two variants; Mi 5 Pro boasts a 3D ceramic cover and 128GB storage with 4GB RAM. The Mi 5 comes with a 3D glass cover and 3GB RAM with 32GB and 64GB storage.

Both phones have LPDDR4 RAM and UFS 2.0 standard flash memory storage Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 chipset which has a customized quad core Kryo processors clocked at 2.2GHz along with Adreno 530 GPU.

Both the variants of Mi 5 is 4G LTE compatible with VoLTE support also. Other features include two nano SIM cards, Wi-fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS with AGPS, NFC, which supports read/write as well as card emulation for quicker pass through.

OS and Software

Both the variants come equipped with Android 6.0 Marshmallow along with the MIUI 7 OS. Additionally, there is an in-house app called Mi Video Call downloadable via the Play Store.

The Mi 5 boasts the 16MP Sony IMX298 sensor which supports phase detect AF and also boasts a new technology called deep trench isolation (DTI) for ultimate picture clarity.

The Mi 5 has a 4MP camera with a 2-micrometer pixel size. The device can shoot 4K videos The Mi 5 also comes equipped with 4axis optical image stabilization(OIS) which takes care of camera shakes along the longitudinal, latitudinal planes, rolling shake and stutter caused due to shooting while walking.

Battery

Mi 5 has a 3000mAh battery and is non-removable. The device also boasts QuickCharge 3.0 technology which Xiaomi claims takes only an hour to charge the Mi5.
